This is a really fascinating movie (appr. 50 min) about the “Queen of Rivers”, the River Danube. The River Danube is one of the largest European river ecosystems with a discharge of 6700 m³/s and a total length of 2857 km and it is the home e.g. the biggest freshwater fish in the World, the Beluga Sturgeon (Huso huso). This movie, directed by Rita and Michael Schlamberger, follows the river course from the very small headwaters in the German Black Forest to the mouth into the Black Sea. Thus, the river crosses entire Europe and passes four European capital cities and a vast number of different fascinating riverscapes along its course.
A related scientific project investigating the River Danube from a ecological point of view is Joint Danube Survey (JDS) which took place the second time last year (2013). The final results will be published in autumn 2014 on their website: http://www.danubesurvey.org
